About
Xanax is tranquilizer containing the active ingredient Alprazolam. It is used for treating anxiety disorders (anxiety and panic disorders). Xanax is a Central Nervous System depressant and works by enhancing the effect of GABA a chemical substance that has a soothing effect on the brain.
Generic version of Xanax is available as pills of strength 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg; 1mg and 2mg. Brand Xanax manufactured by Pfizer Inc are available in strength of 2mg.
Xanax relaxes muscles, reduces anxiety, stops seizures and causes sleepiness. Xanax can also be used for treating anxiety resulting from depression.
Usage
Xanax tablets can be taken two to three times a day with or without food depending on your choice. If Xanax upsets your stomach take it with food.
Never take two doses of Zanax at a time in case you have missed an earlier dose.
Xanax is contraindicated (not to be used) for persons allergic to alprazolam or other benzodiazepines. Do not use Xanax if you have narrow-angle glaucoma.
Caution: Xanax comes under US FDA Pregnancy Category D which means Xanax should not be used by pregnant women as it could possibly result in birth defects in unborn child. As Xanax could pass into breast milk it should not be used by nursing mothers either.
Caution: Xanax overdose may cause fatalities. Typical symptoms of Xanax overdose are fainting, light-headedness, drowsiness and muscle weakness. Consult your doctor immediately if you suspect Zanax overdose.
Side Effects
Xanax could cause fatigue, drowsiness, insomnia and blurred vision which are less serious side effects. However seek emergency help if you experience serious side effects like hallucinations, seizure, tremor, jaundice or decrease in quantity of urine passed.
In some people Xanax could cause sexual dysfunction especially in patients being treated for panic disorder. Consult your doctor if you experience Xanax sexual side effects and get your Xanax dosage adjusted to cover this problem.
Precaution
Xanax could be habit forming and should not be given or used by people with a history of drug abuse.
Avoid alcohol, and grapefruit while undergoing treatment with Zanax as it could cause unwanted side effects.
Xanax tablets should be stored at room temperature away from moisture, heat and light.
Do not use Zanax if you are below 18 years of age.
